Life in BookXcess / Big Bad Wolf Books Sdn. Bhd.

As usual, I have neglected my blog after a while. I could easily blame it on the country or the authorities for limiting the events, raves and parties. But those will only be lame excuses. There should be no reason that the blog is left abandoned. There are always parties elsewhere. I just need to go for it.

For the past 11 months, life has been really crazy for me. I have been introduced into a company as Crazy Susan in December 2015. Up to date, I am still Crazy Susan.

For years I have been in the teaching industry. Last year, I decided to break all boundaries and start doing something I have never done before. I called up for an interview at Big Bad Wolf Books for a job opportunity. To be honest, I did not know what to expect. I just went there asking for a job.

All my life I have been asked to work in their company. People called me up offering me a job. This was my first time applying for a job, what more, something that I have not done or experienced before. The interview ended with me, being hired as BBW social media executive. My first full time job after so many years.

What exactly was the job scope for a social media? I had to sit in front of the computer searching for groups and sources to post our ads or promotions on. It was not as challenging and fun as I thought it would be. As my job was too flexible back then, I helped everyone in the office whenever they needed help. Marketing, business development, operations, etc. I definitely learnt a lot from them.

After 2 months, the General Manager asked me to help him out in some operation related matters at BookXcess retails. Helping him out also meant gaining more knowledge as he brought me into retails every day, giving me pointers on how retails should run. It was an eye opener for me as I never knew retails meant so much work and so much focus. There were so much that needed attention as you run a retail that it never did hit me.

In June, I got promoted to Retail Operations Executive. I step higher to learning more than sitting around the office clicking "post". That was also when our GM left us and I had to cope with work on my own. I was given the choice to drown in the deep sea or swim to safety.

July was a hectic month for me as I had to handle contractors, designers and open 3 outlets within 1 month. On the 2nd week of July, our outlet in 1Utama was opened. 4th week, Centro Klang. 1st week of August, Courtyard. All these happened so quickly. I thank God for having a crazy team with me to help me with all the openings. I will never forget the nights we spent til 4 in the morning getting work done. Up to date, I am very blessed to have my boss alongside with me til 4am, helping set up the outlet. Without the team, I think I would not have made it. Seeing the outcome definitely paid off.

When my bosses came back from work overseas in late September, they called me into their room. I was expecting the worst as I did not know if I was doing right in the retails. I was surprised when they offered me a promotion. It seems that I did swim to safety and earned it. I was promoted as Assistant Manager for 3 Retail outlets with effect in October. What a sweet 29th birthday present for myself.

It was also then that I offered myself to help out in BBW Surabaya. They flew me to Surabaya for Big Bad Wolf Books Sales. I was in Surabaya for a total of 18 days.

That's how I spent my first birthday working. I have never worked on my birthday, what more, abroad! It was my first work experience overseas and being away from home for so long (not for vacation). I have never studied abroad in my younger years. It was truly very different. I got to understand the pros and cons of working overseas. I actually felt homesick for once. I do not know if it was the birthday greetings on Facebook and whatsapp or my nieces calling me and video calling me, wishing me happy birthday from the screen. I really wanted them with me at that moment. I knew then how parents who work away from their children felt. My colleagues at work were so nice to buy me KFC to celebrate my birthday. Such loves.

My shifts at Surabaya were 12 hours based, 8pm to 8am. For the first few nights, I couldn't keep my eyes open from 3 to 5am. It was really suffering til the 2nd week. It was a work, eat, sleep, eat, work cycle everyday. Fast food joints were everywhere. We walked from our hotel to work, passing by KFC everyday, which was a stone throw away from Starbucks and Pizza Hut. Giant was the only place we went for "shopping" and it wasn't too far neither. Oh, Pizza Hut there has such a big variety of choices! The pizza there seems more delicious than it is here in Malaysia!

Starbucks was a place where I visited most this trip. I had to stay awake all night. Even colleagues had me do deliveries for them. The cards I purchased there were pretty. Good for collection. I managed to score free drinks, free birthday cakes as I spent my birthday there. It was a pity that there wasn't any nice tumblers to buy. And as usual, my name would be Suzan than Susan. I was such a regular there that the baristas knew me by heart and greeted me by my name whenever I stepped in.

There was a fast food place called Richeese. I would recommend those who loves to compete with others on the spicy level of their tolerance. They offer chicken with 5 levels of spicy. For me, I went for 0 as I can't take spicy. Watching my colleagues cry and get all soaked up with sweat makes me laugh a little inside. I'm evil.

photo 20161101_193042_zpswep62yfr.jpgAs for accommodation and all in Surabaya, I would say it was ok. Breakfast was always repetitive food but it was good enough for us to not go to sleep starving. I had my eggs cooked the way I wanted everyday, just not half boiled eggs as it is not known there (or maybe it was just the language barrier). As for the room, it was perfect for me. I would love a room like that. I have always loved the concept of an open bathroom, or rather a see through bathroom from the bedroom. I could see the sunset from the bathroom and also watch tv while taking a shower. It gives a very clean feeling, til it's time to clean the glass of course. The water pressure of the shower was awesome! I never wanted to leave the shower ever! I had room service for the first time of my life on the last night of the trip. I felt like a queen. Such a lazy brat who just wouldn't get out of the room, watching movies on TV one after another.

photo 20161017_162740_zpspaisk3nm.jpgLaundry has been very cheap. I paid only about RM5 for a bag of clothes worn for 2 weeks plus. I have never been to a laundry but this is really cheap. Certain things are pretty cheap there. I heard from the PA that even cigarettes are 1/3 of the price in Malaysia! It's a smoker's paradise there. A&W there still serves root beer float in a glass mug! How I missed the good old times.

photo 20161021_183018_zpsmdlicuqe.jpgIf there's one thing I dreaded most everyday? I would say the traffic. For us to get to work, we had to cross 3 major main roads with crazy traffic and also 1 railway track. People there are so used to the "Power of the hand" that they would hold it up and just cross the road. So far, we have not seen anyone being ran over. On the days when I was on my own, I usually waited for a local to do the magic and I just tag along, trying to act cool.

Overall, the trip was tiring but I learnt a lot from it. We all definitely couldn't wait to get on that flight to go back home. Everyone felt homesick during the trip. Many calls were made home, pictures and videos exchanged, tantrums let out. Most of us even had the cravings of pork. Nevertheless, it is definitely great to be back home.

Astro Battleground Grand Final and Asian Battleground

I'm sorry dear readers for neglecting you again. The only reason I could give is that I have been busy juggling with all my freelance jobs and besides, life had been pretty dull for me lately. Nothing much has been happening, without any invites or passes for any events. I just realized over the weekend that my Glitterati status has been removed because of unknown reasons. Maybe that's why I have been left out on events. When I said I am juggling with freelance jobs, I am not kidding you. I have recently been working as a freelance piano teacher, journalist at Ipoh Echo, tele-marketer for my friend's home-stay website, Carnival planner (for Daybreak's charity fun fair in 16th August 2014. Click here for more information.), Daybreak webmaster, etc. I have also been hired last week to start work in Mariaville Kindergaten starting July. Work life is pretty interesting for me.

Anyway, back to the happening self, I went for Astro Battleground Grand Final on 31st May at Megastar Arena Kuchai Lama. For the first time, I used Astro Circle to redeem tickets with my Astro points. Since the items I wanted were not in stock, the other best thing was to redeem VIP tickets. I have never enjoyed Astro Battleground in style before. Having 2 tickets in hand, I offered one to my girlfriend, Stephanie. I was quite disappointed as to how I got my tickets on the day itself. I was directed to a few people before the ticket was handed over to me.

In this year's competition, I don't know any of the contestants. The only person on stage that I knew was Dennis Yin and he was the Emcee of the night. He did quite a good job in being a good Emcee although his Chinese was funny. As I sat down expecting my mind to be blown by new dancers, I was entertained by friends who sat behind me. Joey, Kei, Cavan, Shahrul, etc were all making jokes and being silly like they always do.

S-Striker and Fearless were the last ones standing in this competition and song after song, we all sit at the edge of our chairs. They were equally good. Funky Lia came out to dance with them for a song and you can tell how good she really is.

In the end, Fearless won, with the chance to battle it out amongst each other to gain the title of "battle king". I thought LegoSam was really good in his solo. However, he lost to Khenobu, who was equally good as well.

As the show ended, I hung around with Steph and Shahrul for supper and then joined them for a drink at the after party with Astro Battleground people. It was a little awkward sitting there as they were all chatting away, coz I didn't know most of the people. However, I enjoyed being in the presence because I get to watch them dance as the songs blasted in the background. I also got the opportunity to watch Funky Lia dance Solo and grab a picture with her before she left.

Instead of linking photos from my photobucket like I always do, I'm just going to post my Facebook link here. Feel free to check out the photos from my Facebook! (<--Click)

On the following week, which was 6th June, I went to Asian Battleground with the same VIP tickets. This competition however was mind blowing. Contestants came from Indonesia, Philippines, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong to compete with our local dancers. The dancers were crazy!!! The top 4 on the score board, Japon De Bombs was first, which had girls which could really twerk. Just Jerk Crew was placed 2nd, which I would die to give 1st anytime, 3rd to Return Dance which consisted of 4 guys who could work it like Beyonce, 4th was S-Striker, our local dance group.

From the first sight of seeing Just Jerk Crew dance, I fell in love. I was such a fan girl at that moment of time. Mind you, I am NEVER a fan girl of anyone. They are so GOOD!!!! They were champions in my heart before it even ended. After the 4 finalists battled it out amongst themselves, it was only down to our S-Striker and Just Jerk Crew. Watching the 2 teams come up with their perfect Solo and group routines made everyone scream in excitement. In the end, Just Jerk Crew won!!! I was so happy for them.

Had Old Klang Road Bak Kut Teh after  that with Stephanie because I didn't have time for dinner before the event. So worth the starvation. Bummer that I didn't get to take a picture with Just Jerk crew. :(

Pictures are all loaded into my facebook account, under Astro Battleground album. Feel free to scroll through my Facebook! (<--Click)!!!

#REACHOUT 2014 at Taylor's with Kina Grannis, Jason Chen and David Choi!!!

Today's the day I've been looking forward to for so long. It's REACH OUT 2014!!! I finally get to see Kina Grannis, David Choi and Jason Chen LIVE!!!! I have to admit I am a bit slow in following up youtubers. I got hooked onto David Choi's music after Jinny put it up on his videos. Hearing so much about Kina from friends, I searched her up and recently too shared a video of hers which I really loved on Facebook that she commented on. And as for Jason Chen? The first time I heard about him was when he did the cover of Tong Hua in English. That was super unique! Now that I get a chance to see them perform live, WHY MISS IT?

I zoomed all the way to Taylor's Lakeside after work at 7pm, hoping that I didn't miss any of them and thankfully, I was still early. I bumped into Jeremy and Brendan, the music producers that I only always meet at events. Spotted Munnie and her friends during break time. We had a drink before heading back for a long session of standing.

After entering the hall, I realized that I left my camera's memory card in my laptop. HOW SMART! Walking out of the hall, I bumped into the awesome blogger TianChad and told him I had to run out to get a memory card. I remember seeing a computer store just nearby. However, I was too late as it was already closed. Should have checked my camera earlier so I would notice and get one.

Feeling bummed, I dragged myself back to the hall. On the way back, I spotted Dan, Jeremy and Guan in Starbucks. I had to say HI. After telling them how stupid I was of leaving my memory card at home, Jeremy offered to borrow a memory card. He's such a life saver. This is the advantage of having a photographer friend. Thanks Jeremy!!! Btw, visit his photography page HERE.

Here's a picture of Guan. Although I've seen him so many times, I never realized how tall he actually was. That's because at previous occasions, I was always in heels. I was in my sneakers today...

Dan Khoo with the photobomber behind. JEREY WAI U LAI DIS??? He almost always photobombs my photos with Dan.

Reuben from Jinnyboy TV was there too. There were here to be part of the MC of the event.

Here's Joseph Germani, the Youtuber who has the same passion as me. SHOES! Yes, note that I used the word Passion for no reason. LOL! He was wearing one of the Jeremy Scott Shoes today. One day I shall wear mine and have a picture with him in the same shoes. One day...

Here's Munnie. It's been forever since I have seen her. She is a dancer and will be leaving for Aussie soon. I will miss you...

Jun Sung Ahn was up. I wasn't sure who he was before but I did some research on Youtube before attending the event. He's a talented Violinist. Brings back memories of when I learnt the violin. I wonder if I would be as talented if I continued with violin classes before...

Here's some videos of him.

Next up? JASON CHEN!!!! YAYY!!! I wanted to buy his tee but however, I had no luck in finding it outside like he said. Maybe it was sold out. Darn... It was a replay button with a treble clef. I was planning to buy and wear it to work tomorrow like a uniform since I teach music...

Madilyn Bailey was up next. I have never heard her sing before and I could say I was blown away by the first song she sang. It was Thrift Shop but in a totally different version! I loved it!!!

But wait, that is not all! David Choi had a duet with Kina Grannis!!! Unfortunately, I only had 2 videos of it because my phone a battery died on me... :(

The event ended with the song "Happy" by all the youtubers!

I am so sorry for not providing a lot of good videos and pictures like I usually do. Clearer videos and pictures were taken via my Casio digital camera and blur ones were zoomed up by my Samsung Note 2. Videos of my phone were taken via Instagram because my phone's battery was too low to run on camera mode. I have truly learnt my lesson to charge both my phone and camera batteries at ALL TIMES. Also, bring a memory card or at least keep a spare memory card in my wallet at all times... Despite my battery going on and off during the event, I still got to take quite awesome photos. Here's my favourite. What's yours?
 photo CIMG0095_zpseac67016.jpg

From today's event, I saw a lot of over the top fan girls. They were screaming "AHHH!!! MARRY ME!!!" and "HE SMILED AT ME!!!" and stuff like that. As their voices increase, crescendo'ing to shouts, I laid low and just walk pass. I wonder if they would even pass out. Scary!!! I guess it is just normal for the photographers and media to see such events. This reminds me of the time I was at MTV Asia event and the girls were screaming like mad when Justin Bieber went on stage.

Do stay tuned for more events and happenings on my blog. I am interested to attend any if you have extra tickets. HINT HINT! LOL!
